The custom built cattle handling facilities are designed for maximum comfort and safety, providing your cows with a "stress free" environment. The donor and recipient housing at Alta Embryo is organized to provide multiple clean and dry pens to allow for size and age segregation, and more efficient feeding programs.

The cow/calf pairs are maintained on a small amount of pasture with creep feed available for the calves. All the cattle are fed a well balanced silage ration to ensure optimum embryo production and pregnancy rates. (More Info...)

Alta Embryo Group services all of western Canada, so contact the office to find out when we are going to be in your area next. It is never too soon to start planning your embryo program.

Alta Embryo Group operates both at our facility and "on farm". Our mobile unit can meet most of your embryo transfer needs and you never have to leave the comfort of home. The team consists of a veterinarian and an embryologist, with embryo transfer supplies conveniently packed in a minivan. We can flush your valuable donor cow(s) in your handling facilities, do the lab work in your farm/home office and the embryos can either be, implanted fresh into recipients or frozen for later use. The results "on farm" are no different than performing the work at the clinic, for most it is just a matter of convenience.

Import
Alta Embryo Group provides an import service for embryos and semen. We have contacts in many countries that can assist in the acquisition of semen and embryos. If you have already purchased embryos or semen from overseas, we can assist with the delivery to our center in Canada. We apply for import permits where required, communicate with the shipper to ensure that the product arrives safely in the time required, pick up the shipment at the airport or courier center and arrange final health inspection by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.

Export
The embryo production team at Alta Embryo Group (AEG) is certified by the Canadian Embryo Transfer Association and accredited by Agriculture Canada. This allows AEG to be eligible as a qualified export production center, providing superior embryo production and transfer services.

AEG exports embryos to many countries on a continual basis. We prepare health certificates, acquire the shipping tank, communicate shipping details with the consignor and consignee, assist with the acquisition of an import permit, prepare shipping documents, insure the embryos in-transit when required, arrange delivery either by air or ground and follow up to ensure that the product arrived on time in safe condition.
Semen can also be included in most embryo shipments.

IVF is an exciting and potentially advantageous technique for the modern cattle breeder. Salvaging genetics from infertile animals or producing embryos during pregnancy are IVF's main applications. As with all breeding techniques, there are advantages and disadvantages that should be closely examined when considering IVF. Please feel free to call us for consultation about your potential IVF needs.

Alta Embryo Group Ltd. first started its research into embryo sexing in 1989. By 1992, a commercial procedure was being offered to our clients. This was a major advance in particular for the dairy industry, where bull calves are wanted only from the very top end of the breed.

High quality embryos can be mechanically bisected. A very fine glass needle is used to cut the embryo in half and both half-embryos are transferred to synchronous recipients.

If both recipients become pregnant, the calves born are genetically identical twins. If 10 embryos are split and transferred to twenty recipients, on average about 10 calves will be produced. This is one tool which can be used to maximize the number of calves produced from donors. The procedure is not offered in combination with embryo freezing- frozen/thawed embryos will not be split and split embryos will not be frozen. It is applied only with #1 quality embryos.

The Alta Embryo team involves some of the industry's most leading edge and knowledgeable individuals. The embryo production department consists of veterinarians, embryologists and technicians that not only pioneered "Embryo Transfer" in Canada, but have continued to develop new techniques for practical use in the livestock breeding industry.

Alta Embryo's dedicated prossionals are respected worldwide as educators and trainers in many areas of embryo transfer and cattle reproduction.
